SRECS - Solar Renewable Energy Credits
Solar Renewable Energy Credits - commonly referred to as RECs or Green Tags are an extra financial incentive for people who install photovoltaics - in addition - to generating a portion of ones own electricity.
This is how the system works. Most States throughout the US have an authority - commonly referred to as a PSC or Public Service Commission - that regulates, oversees, and mandates electric utilities to comply by certain standards. These standards are commonly referred to as RPS - (Renewable Portfolio Standards). For example, Delaware's legislature has mandated that all utilities are to have 20% of their power generated from Renewables by the year 2019 - (SB-19 per 2007 legislative session).. Maryland's Legislature mandated 20% of their power generated to come from Renewables by 2022 - (SB-209 per 2008 session). And Pennsylvania has a similar mandate also.
As a result of the RPS standards, customers - (residential and commercial) - reap a financial benefit by requring the utility to either pay for procurement of SRECs, or, pay a stiff penalty which usually is subtantially higher than the price paid to buy SRECs from prospective generators.
How much are SRECs worth?
I have personnally witnessed Delaware's SRECs bringing on average about $250 per SREC or 1 megawatt hour of renewable electricity production. Pennsylvania and Maryland are currently a little higher - $350 per SREC.
Bottom Line?
We at Electrical Solutions can help you to market these SRECS - bringing the buyers and sellers to the negotiating table. We are currently helping our customers to market these valuable attributes by presenting to each of our customers the projected revenues as part of our Proposal. We not only install photovoltaics but we also help to arrange the sale of your system's attribute.
This is just one of many reasons that makes our organization stand out among the crowd of installers.
